Alkane

Def. An organic compound consisting of single bonded carbons. 




Examples:

1) Pentane (C5H12) is an alkane with five single bonded carbon atoms. It is  used in the production of polystyrene foam (known as Styrofoam).




2) Butane (C4H10) is an alkane with four single bonded carbon atoms. It is mainly used as a component for LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas), a fuel for cigarette lighters and torches and propellant in aerosol sprays.
